2.2.1 Operating System

An operating system is a set of system programs, which provides a number of facilities to the user for easy use of the Computer.

Basic functions of Operating System:

  • Controls and coordinates the operation of a Computer
  • Easy interaction between user and Computer
  • Starts the Computer automatically when power is turned on
  • Controls input and output
  • Controls program execution
  • Manages use of main memory
  • Manages and manipulates files
  • Schedule the processes
  • provide platform for  installing and running programs

Operating System works on top of computer hardware:
