5.2 Basics of Computer Networks

A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs), exchange files, or allow electronic communications. The computers on a networkmay be linked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams.

The merging of Computers and communications has had a profound influence on the way Computer systems are organized. The old model of a single mainframe computer serving all of organizations need has been replaced by one in which a large number of separate but interconnected computers do the job. These systems called Computer Networks.
