Java is a general-purpose, object-oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems of USA in 1991.Originally called Oak by James Gosling (one of the inventor of the language). Java was invented for the development of software for cunsumer electronic devices like TVs, tosters, etc. The main aim had to make java simple, portable and reliable.

Advantages of Java

Java is easy to learn, portable, object-oriented, and platform-independent. It can also handle memory management and exceptions. We can learn Java easily because the syntax of the Java language is similar to that of C and C++. Therefore, switching from C or C++ to Java is easy. Java applications are portable. During compilation, the Java code is converted to an intermediate language called bytecode. The bytecode can be executed on any platform having a JVM. Therefore, only JVM needs to be implemented to run Java applications. The Java architecture provides security to applications as well as the runtime environment.
